Web bot is a common term describing any automated software designed to impersonate a user on the web. In general, “bot” describes those programs that are designed specifically to navigate across many websites with the purpose of cataloging the location and content of the pages they visit for later reference.
The Value of Web Bots
Web Bots make using the internet much easier and faster than it would be without them. Search engines use web bots to identify and map out websites and analyze them for their relevance to any topic or set of keywords. There are many kinds of web bots, each providing a different valuable function and all of them saving you time.
The purpose of a web bot is simply to know your way around the internet. The internet is too large to use without search functionality, and searching the internet live takes too long. Bots traverse all of the hyperlinks in a website, noting the location and content of each page. A note on each webpage is stored that describes basic features of each page such as the words present, how many times those words repeat, etc.
Web bots are fairly simple, and their uses are generally restricted to cataloging or mapping out the locations of various pages on the internet. This includes site mapping, search indexing, and general intelligence on the internet.
